Massive Jam Causes Nairobi–Nakuru Highway to a Standstill

Motorists on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway were forced to remain in their cars overnight after traffic jam spilled across many kilometres from Naivasha to Kikopey on Thursday evening.

The congestion, which began at 8:30 p.m., carried over to Friday morning. Some drivers indicated that they were stuck for more than 10 hours, while others counted close to 15 hours on the road.

KeNHA blamed reckless driving and overlapping for the mess, saying the unusually high number of vehicles made the situation worse.

Part of the traffic was linked to the NYS pass-out parade in Gilgil, which pulled in thousands of visitors, including families and senior officials, clogging the busy route.

The roads agency advised motorists heading to Nakuru to try alternative routes such as Gilgil–Olkalou–Dundori–Lanet or Flyover–Njambini–Olkalou–Dundori–Lanet.

“The Authority is working with traffic police to clear the jam,” KeNHA said, adding that flow of traffic would improve as the day went on.

Bus companies also warned of late departures and arrivals. Students travelling back to school were among those who spent the night on the road.
