Security agencies in Nyanza have arrested 56 suspects in Homa Bay in a renewed crackdown on gangs accused of engaging in violence, intimidation and other criminal activities.

Nyanza Regional Criminal Investigations Officer George Mutonya said the operation was part of wider efforts to deal with goonism, including violence linked to political activities.

Speaking to the media at his office, Mutonya warned that those found engaging in criminal activities would face the law regardless of their social status or political connections.

He said the Nyanza Regional Multi-Agency Intelligence Committee, led by the Regional Commissioner, was committed to addressing the problem, including allegations that some politicians hire gangs to intimidate opponents or disrupt public activities.

Homa Bay Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Peter Maina said the recent arrests, including that of alleged gang leader Abdi Sebo, demonstrated the authorities’ efforts to tackle the vice.

According to security officials, the 56 suspects are facing charges for crimes related to goonism.

The agencies have also increased public awareness campaigns, encouraging the citizens to shun violence and report criminal activities in their neighborhoods.

Security officials have said that cooperation from the citizens is essential in tracing the suspects, collecting information and preventing attacks on persons and property.

This operation follows concern over the use of gangs to threaten people and disrupt democratic processes.

The authorities have requested the citizens to report information regarding criminal activities through the toll-free hotline of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), 0800 722 203, or the WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

The DCI says that reporting can be anonymous.

The security agencies have called on residents to work with law enforcement officers to help maintain peace and safety across the Nyanza region.
