Twenty-one students from universities and TVET institutions across the country have been recognised for their strong performance in the 2025/2026 Huawei ICT Competition.

The students were awarded during the Connected Africa Summit 2026, in an event that brought together government officials, education leaders, and industry players.

Among those recognised, nine students have been selected to represent Kenya at the global finals set for early June in Shenzhen, China. They include Melane Minayo, Joan Kinoti, Faith Mosonik, Denzel Ninga, Joy Njoroge, Robert Wambua, Catherine Atieno, Brian Kamau, and Salem Lumumba.

Their selection is considered as an accomplishment that the nation should be proud of, as it proves the rising prominence of the country’s talented IT specialists at the international level.

Notably, students from PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute distinguished themselves after reaching the semi-final round in South Africa. This shows the significant contribution made by TVET institutions towards enhancing the practical IT skills among young people.

The winners of the contest came from various educational institutions located in different parts of the country, including but not limited to the University of Nairobi, JKUAT, Technical University of Kenya, Kenyatta University, Moi University, Machakos University, Mount Kenya University, and others.

According to authorities, the variety of educational organizations demonstrates that today, young people have better opportunities when it comes to digital literacy and training.

The main focus of the event is made on areas such as Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things, which are considered to be essential for Kenya’s digital transformation.

In addition, the government (Ministry of ICT and Digital Economy) assured its ongoing cooperation with other organizations for ensuring that the youth has opportunities and skills in the technology sector.

Among the notable personalities who attended the ceremony were: The Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Mr. Stephen Isaboke, Huawei Kenya management team under the deputy CEO Mr. James Sun Quan, the UNESCO Regional Director for Eastern Africa Mrs. Louise Haxthausen, the Vice Chancellor of Machakos University Prof Joyce Agalo and others.

It is true that the learners have now readied themselves for their participation at the international level, competing against other students all over the world.
