The government has announced that the 2,000-bed Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Multi-Speciality Hospital in Eldoret is on course for completion in early 2027, bringing Kenya closer to having its largest and most advanced public health facility.

Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Olunga made the announcement after a consultative meeting with Defence Principal Secretary Peter Mariru, where the two ministries reviewed the project’s progress and implementation plans.

According to Olunga, construction of the multi-billion-shilling facility is progressing steadily, with the government keen to ensure the project is completed within the planned timeline.

The meeting focused on key construction milestones, timelines and strategies to keep the project on track as work continues at the site in Kiplombe, Eldoret.

Once completed, the hospital is expected to become the largest healthcare facility in Kenya, significantly expanding access to specialised treatment while strengthening the country’s referral healthcare system.

The project is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve access to quality and affordable healthcare services for Kenyans.

Plans for the facility were first announced in January 2023, when then Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha revealed that designs for the hospital had already been completed and that the government was working on financing arrangements to kick-start construction.

Beyond healthcare, the project is expected to have a major economic impact on Uasin Gishu County and the wider North Rift region.

Hundreds of jobs are expected to be created during and after construction, ranging from healthcare professionals and technicians to suppliers, transport operators, food vendors and other support service providers.

Speaking after the meeting, Olunga said the facility would play a critical role in improving access to specialised healthcare while also supporting medical training, research and innovation.

“This is a critical national investment that will strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to specialised medical services,” he said.

In addition, the new hospital is likely to relieve pressure on various referral hospitals throughout the nation because of its superior healthcare delivery services.

Moreover, the hospital may end up attracting people from other nations who are looking for special medical services, thus enhancing the reputation of Eldoret as a medical center.

Given that construction of the hospital is expected to be completed in early 2027, the investment can be termed as the most important healthcare sector investment in recent years.
