After Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto met recently, there was a lot of curiosity about what was discussed behind closed doors. Following the meeting, Uhuru shared a statement highlighting some of the key issues he raised with Ruto, which the President didn’t directly mention in his own address. Here’s a breakdown of those points in simpler terms:

Uhuru spoke about the rising political tensions in the country, especially the treatment of people who are seen as opponents to the government. He mentioned that he had discussed with Ruto the issue of harassment towards those who criticize or oppose the government, something that Ruto only briefly touched on in his statement.

Taxation was another major topic. Uhuru pointed out that ordinary Kenyans have been struggling with high taxes and said that this is something the government needs to look into and find solutions for. This wasn’t a focus in Ruto’s speech.

Uhuru also emphasized the importance of having a strong opposition in Kenya. He believes that a lively and active opposition is necessary to hold the government accountable and ensure that those in power don’t become complacent or unresponsive to the needs of the people.

Another point Uhuru raised was about transparency. He urged Ruto to be more open with Kenyans, saying that the government should constantly communicate with professionals and experts in various fields since they often have useful solutions to the country’s problems.

Uhuru also gently reminded Ruto about the growing issue of insecurity in the country, subtly urging him to take action to address it.

On a more positive note, both Uhuru and Ruto agreed on the need to restructure the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). However, this process is currently stuck due to a pending court case.

The two leaders also recognized that Kenya’s tough economic situation is partly due to global factors, like disruptions in supply chains, which have led to high prices for things like fertilizer and wheat.

Finally, Ruto thanked Uhuru for helping lay the foundation for his administration’s key goals, including improving agriculture, providing universal health coverage, offering affordable housing, and supporting small businesses.
