Emmanuel Wanyonyi has revealed his next target after stunning world lead in Zurich; he will now focus on defending his crown in Brussels before turning his attention to the World Athletics Ultimate Championships.
The reigning Olympic 800m champion says the victory has boosted his confidence at a crucial stage of the athletic season, sharpening his focus as he prepares for the next move.
Wanyonyi’s stunning performance at the Diamond League in Zurich, where he clocked 1:41.76, showcased his form in Lausanne.
He also revealed he had recently overcome a physical concern, a challenge that briefly threatened his rhythm. His comeback to Zurich not only silenced doubts but also reignited belief in his ability to dominate the two-lap-race.
“The race was good. The crowd is amazing. The weather conditions were good…but I managed to run well. I think now my body is coming up,” Wanyonyi said.
The 21-year-old athlete acknowledged the rising pressure that comes with global success, particularly after his recent performances and as he prepares to compete in the Diamond League final.
He said his focus now is maintaining consistency, managing the psychological demands of competition and ensuring peak performance at the upcoming events.
He added he intends to work closely with his coach to develop the right race strategy, as his attention is on the Brussels final.
