Wales has become the first football association to officially withdraw support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election as FIFA President, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) has confirmed.
The FAW has written to FIFA about its position on its chief; Infantino scrapped plans to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors.
“It is hereby we confirm our withdrawal of support for the candidature of Mr. Gianni Infantino for re-election as FIFA President for the 2027-2031 term. The recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgment have led us to position where Mr. Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football,” FAW said.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) had already threatened legal action and issued a preservation order to prevent destruction or records linked to the sell-off plan. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has also pleaded for transparency in FIFA governance.
Infantino is under pressure after UEFA and CONCACAF stated they had lost confidence in his leadership. However, in April, Infantino said he intends to seek re-election for a fourth term as FIFA chief.
