The University of Nairobi has appointed Prof. Ayub N. Gitau as its 9th Vice-Chancellor, ushering in new leadership at the country’s premier institution at a time it is pushing for reforms and global competitiveness.
The appointment was announced by the University Council following a special sitting held on May 14, 2026, which also saw Prof. Josiah O. Aduda named Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance, Planning and Development.
Council Chair Chacha Nyaogotti said the changes mark a fresh phase for the institution as it seeks to strengthen its academic standing and operational efficiency.
“These appointments mark a new chapter for the University of Nairobi as we strengthen leadership for excellence, innovation, and global competitiveness,” Nyaogotti said.
The Council also paid tribute to Prof. Margaret J. Hutchinson for her stewardship while serving in an acting capacity, a period that helped stabilise operations as the university navigated leadership transition.
Prof. Gitau takes over at a time when the University of Nairobi, like many public universities, is grappling with financial pressures, rising student numbers and the need to align its programmes with market demands.
His appointment is expected to bring renewed focus on research, partnerships and institutional reforms aimed at restoring the university’s position as a regional academic leader.
Prof. Aduda’s role in finance and planning will be closely watched, particularly as the institution continues to explore sustainable funding models and improve resource management.
The leadership changes come amid broader reforms in Kenya’s higher education sector, where universities are under pressure to enhance quality, expand innovation and remain competitive globally.
