Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Raila Odinga, remembering him not just as a political titan, but as a personal ally and friend whose influence deeply shaped his own journey in leadership.

In a statement mourning the passing of the former Prime Minister, Kenyatta described Odinga as “more than a political colleague — he was a defining part of my public life and personal growth.”

Reflecting on their early years in politics, Kenyatta acknowledged the intense rivalry that once defined their relationship.

“Raila and I were often on opposite sides of Kenya’s political divide, charting different paths for a country we both cherished. Our competition was fierce — and at times, the weight of it was deeply personal,” he said.

He recalled how Odinga, affectionately known as ‘Baba’, challenged him to refine his ideas and defend his positions with conviction. “He sharpened my thinking, forced me to grow, and demanded that I always be clear in purpose.”

But beyond the rivalry, Kenyatta spoke of a turning point — the historic 2018 Handshake — that redefined their bond.

“Out of that chapter emerged something unexpected: a relationship built on mutual respect, shared patriotism, and a vision for a more united Kenya. That transition from adversaries to partners in peace revealed the true measure of Raila Odinga — a man who could rise above personal ambition for the sake of national harmony.”

He described Odinga not only as a formidable opponent but also an invaluable partner in reconciliation and nation-building.

“I have lost a friend and a brother. I will miss our often spirited, always enlightening conversations — and the unwavering fire of belief that burned in his eyes until the very end.”

To Mama Ida Odinga and the entire Odinga family, Kenyatta extended his “deepest and most heartfelt condolences,” adding: “You shared Baba with the nation for a lifetime, and now, we mourn with you.”

Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment in India, following weeks of speculation over his health. His death marks the end of a political era spanning over four decades — a legacy defined by resilience, relentless pursuit of reform, and five passionate bids for the presidency.

Odinga leaves behind a towering legacy — one that stirred both admiration and debate — and an indelible mark on Kenya’s democratic journey.
