Mount Elgon MP Fred Kapondi has threatened to take legal action against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over claims linking him to the killing of former councillor Nathan Wasama.
Kapondi on Thursday dismissed the allegations, demanding that Gachagua provide evidence to support his claims.
“I will sue him because he is not above the law,” Kapondi said.
The UDA MP accused Gachagua of making “wild allegations” and challenged him to explain where the alleged firearms were recovered.
Gachagua had on Wednesday claimed that security officers raided Kapondi’s residence after he raised concerns over Wasama’s killing.
According to Gachagua, the officers allegedly recovered 18 guns and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition from the MP’s home.
“When I announced it, the pressure became intense; last night they went to the area MP Fred Kapondi’s place and found 18 guns and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition,” Gachagua claimed.
Gachagua also alleged that Wasama was killed because he wanted to contest the Mount Elgon parliamentary seat.
Kapondi has, however, denied any involvement in the killing or knowledge of the alleged weapons.
He said he had never threatened Wasama, who was also interested in contesting the Mount Elgon seat in the 2027 General Election.
“My conscience is clear. I have never been in the business of killing political opponents,” Kapondi said.
The legislator also questioned why investigators had not publicly addressed Gachagua’s claims.
“How can the investigators conducting the investigation allow the former Deputy President to make wild allegations without them refuting them?” he posed.
Wasama, 61, was shot dead on the night of August 8 at his shop in Tuikut Trading Centre, Cheptais, Bungoma County.
He was a former Chesikaki Ward councillor, businessman and aspiring politician who had expressed interest in challenging for the Mount Elgon parliamentary seat in 2027.
The killing has since taken a political turn, with Gachagua’s claims putting Kapondi at the centre of the controversy.
However, there is no indication in the reports that Kapondi has been charged or formally linked to the murder by investigators.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has instead arrested several suspects as it continues with the probe.
Among those arrested are Oscar Koech Sakong, Wycliffe Chesubei Ngeiwa alias Chota and Geoffrey Makwere Masai.
Two other suspects, Robert Kimutai Psisei alias Robert Miti and Brian Chongin Kaos, surrendered to police on August 12 and were arrested.
The DCI said the suspects will be processed to face murder charges.
As investigations continue, Kapondi has maintained that he is ready to cooperate with detectives and challenged Gachagua to produce evidence linking him to the killing.
The threatened lawsuit now adds another layer to the growing political dispute surrounding Wasama’s death, even as detectives continue to pursue those behind the killing.
