The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has retained the Emurua Dikir parliamentary seat following a hotly contested by-election that drew national political attention, even as DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua admitted his candidate had mounted a strong challenge.

In a statement issued after the results, Gachagua congratulated his party’s candidate Vincent Rotich for what he described as a spirited performance, noting that the race had “shaken South Rift politics” and tested UDA’s grip in a region widely seen as a stronghold of President William Ruto.

“Congratulations to DCP candidate Vincent Rotich for the splendid performance that has shaken South Rift politics. DCP stormed Ruto’s perceived stronghold in style and gave him a run for his money,” Gachagua said.

Despite the strong showing by the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), UDA managed to hold onto the seat, reinforcing its dominance in the South Rift, a region that has traditionally backed President Ruto.

The by-election had attracted significant political interest, with analysts viewing it as an early test of emerging alliances and rivalries ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua’s active involvement in the campaigns signaled the growing push by his camp to make inroads into regions previously considered firmly under UDA.

While conceding defeat, Gachagua’s remarks pointed to a broader political message, framing the outcome as a sign that the political landscape in the Rift Valley could be shifting, even if gradually.

For UDA, the victory offers a timely boost, reaffirming its grassroots strength in the region and slowing down opposition momentum.

The contest now adds to a series of recent by-elections being closely watched for signals on the evolving political balance, with both sides expected to recalibrate strategies as the race toward 2027 begins to take shape.
