Two police officers were injured and two government vehicles damaged during an incident involving politicians in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, on Friday, October 16, the National Police Service (NPS) has said.
In a statement, the police said preliminary reports indicated that some politicians had acted in breach of the Public Order Act, raising concerns over public safety and the maintenance of law and order.
The service condemned the incident, saying the reported actions undermined public order and the rule of law.
Investigations have since begun to establish what happened and determine the responsibility of those involved.
The NPS said appropriate action would be taken against anyone found culpable once the investigations are complete.
The police also called on political leaders, their supporters and other stakeholders to exercise restraint and maintain peace, warning against conduct that could put members of the public at risk.
The service reiterated that no one was above the law, regardless of their political affiliation, position or social status.
It added that individuals found engaging in violence, inciting supporters, sponsoring criminal gangs or disrupting lawful gatherings would face action in accordance with the law.
The NPS further maintained that it remained apolitical and impartial in carrying out its constitutional mandate to protect Kenyans and maintain law and order.
The circumstances surrounding the Kitale incident remain under investigation, and the police have not named the politicians involved.
