TikTok is reportedly preparing to launch a new version of its platform in the U.S., dubbed ”M2” as pressure mounts from American lawmakers for the app to sever ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. The new app is expected to be available on the Apple App Store starting September 5,2025, and could eventually replace the existing version for users in the U.S.
The move follows the passing of a U.S. divestment law requiring ByteDance to relinquish its control over TikTok’s American operations or face a total ban. To comply, TikTok staff have been working on M2 — a version of the app that meets U.S. regulatory demands. While ByteDance may still hold a minority stake, majority ownership of M2 is expected to shift to non-Chinese investors.
For now, both TikTok and M2 are set to run side-by-side, likely until March 2026, allowing for a gradual transition. However, users will need to install M2 manually. Concerns are already surfacing about how user data, including saved videos, likes, and watch history, will transfer to the new app.
Another major concern is the algorithm. Under the new law, ByteDance cannot control TikTok’s recommendation engine — the very system that powers the iconic ”For You” feed. Without it, users fear the app may lose its signature charm.
Some tech insiders warn that the dual-app experience could cause glitches and confusion. Others see this as a necessary move to ensure national security and data privacy.
