Another tragedy at Makindu Boys High School in Makueni County has occurred after three people, including a father and a son, have died after drowning in a septic tank at the school on Thursday afternoon.
The victims were contracted to clean the school’s septic system when the tragedy occurred. Reports show they didn’t have protective gear and they lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen, which led to suffocate.
Emergency responders and the Kenya Red Cross rushed to the scene to conduct recovery operation, but on arrival they confirmed the three were lying dead after hours of searching and rescuing the bodies.
Authorities have launched investigations into the incident, raising concerns over the safety standards and compliance within the environment.
The incident occurred a few hours after another tragedy occurred at Utumishi Girls High School in Nakuru County shocking the nation, after sixteen students were reported to have died in a dormitory fire, with seventy-nine hospitalized nursing injuries.
Some reports also show similar tragedies of workers falling into septic tanks such as in 2021 in Kiambu County, three workers died in a septic tank and in 2018, when four workers in Nairobi died in a similar case.
