The Director of Public Prosecutions has approved charges against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s aides and allies accused of planning and financing the violent anti-government protests.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations had implicated Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi alias Mejja Donk, Embakasi North’s James Mwangi Gakuya, Embakasi West’s George Theuri, Ngunjiri Wambugu and Pius G. Munene in the planning of the demos.
The investigation agency said the five held several meetings at Hotel Boulevard in Nairobi to orchestrate the deadly demos on June 25, 2024 and subsequent days and wrote to the DPP recommending charges against them.
In a statement, DPP said there is sufficient evidence to charge the suspects with the offence of conspiracy to commit felony contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code.
In addition, the DPP said a separate inquiry file should be opened for money laundering and financial crimes related offences against the five.
