A drama teacher from Moi High School Mbiruri has come out to clear the air, saying the school’s play was not banned but lost at the regional drama festivals.

Speaking during a live phone interview on JKLive on Citizen TV, the teacher, Esther Murungu, said reports suggesting the play was blocked were not true.

“Actually, what Dennis Itumbi is saying is true. The play lost at the regional level. It was position four, and we tried to appeal,” she said.

Murungu questioned earlier media reports on the issue, saying they were misleading.

“The media house got it wrong and actually we want to get to the bottom of it. I don’t even know where they got that information from. Whoever came up with that story has something to answer,” she added.

She maintained that there was nothing controversial about the play, insisting its message was purely about generational differences.

“The messaging in the play is about the generation gap between Gen Zs and older people who may not understand them. There is nothing political about it,” she said.

On claims that the play mentioned Singapore, Murungu confirmed the reference but said it was only used in a light way.

“Yes, there was mention of Singapore, but it was just for fun. There’s a part where a character says they are travelling to Singapore,” she explained.

Her remarks came during a wider panel discussion that also featured Cleophas Malala and Ian Mbugua, as debate continues over what really happened to the play at the drama festivals.
