County Assembly Speaker Ken Ngondi has declared that the concerns of MCAs and the plight of Nairobi voters must come first in any political settlement at City Hall, even as Governor Johnson Sakaja moved to cool tensions through crisis talks.

Ngondi made the demand on Thursday during a closed-door meeting with Sakaja and Assembly committee chairpersons at the Governor’s office.

The high-level talks came just days after an impeachment motion against Sakaja was suspended — a motion that had threatened to plunge Nairobi into fresh political turmoil.

“The plight of MCAs and the voters is non-negotiable,” Speaker Ngondi firmly stated after the meeting.

The discussions focused on fast-tracking stalled development projects across all 85 wards, unlocking the bursary stalemate that has left thousands of needy students without school fees, clearing pending bills owed to contractors, and securing financial autonomy for the Assembly.

Political observers say Sakaja, who has been under intense scrutiny over governance gaps, delayed payments, and frosty relations with MCAs, had little choice but to sit at the table.

“By engaging the Speaker and committee chairs directly, Sakaja is making a bold step toward restoring trust and averting future political showdowns,” noted Andrew Mutua, a seasoned City Hall commentator.

Insiders revealed that while both leaders emphasized honesty and cooperation going forward, Ngondi set the tone by insisting that people’s interests must override political maneuvering.

For now, the meeting appears to have cooled tempers within the Assembly. But whether Governor Sakaja can sustain goodwill and deliver on Ngondi’s demand to prioritize Nairobians remains the real test of his leadership.
