South Rift Musicians Seek More Support as Government Backs Creative Industry

The government has committed itself to supporting the creative industry by highlighting its role as a major contributor to the national economy and the primary factors of innovation, employment, and cultural expression.

At a meeting with a few musicians of the South Rift region led by Makiche arap Rotich, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had the chance to talk about the plans that are still underway to implement the commitments previously made to the artistes of the area.

The government acknowledged the power of music and arts in solving social issues. Collaborating with creatives, the government is implementing campaigns against drug and substance abuse. Artistic expressions are also being used to promote peace and cohesion among communities.

The musicians informed the officials about their intentions to form a Community, Based Organization (CBO) that will help them tap on financing sources, unify their voices, and increase their incomes.

Among the artists whomade up the delegation were Paul Lang’at Subembe, the legendary musician, and Mboyo Keticha, who with Makiche arap Rotich in their appeal to the government for more support and empowerment of the artists in the South Rift region.

The meeting highlights the government’s wider initiative in developing Kenya’s creative economy by empowering artists, providing them with financial opportunities, and recognizing the arts as one of the main pillars of national development.
