Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has announced his decision to leave the alcohol business and sell his high-end club in Mombasa.
While posting on X on Thursday morning, Sonko said he has decided to turn a new leaf in life and get closer to God. According to him, he has decided to leave the alcohol business because it no longer feels right.
Sonko said he has decided to sell or lease out his Club Volume VIP. Additionally, he said he may even give away the alcohol in the club.
“This marks a new chapter in my life,” Sonko said.
While at the club, Sonko posted a video showing different parts of the club. At one point in the video, he said the business earns him up to KSh30 million in a good weekend. The video attracted the attention of many Kenyans.
The club itself has the reputation of being flashy, with several bars and a new setup which makes it appealing to party lovers in Mombasa.
After his announcement, however, the reactions from the public were varied. Some people were in support of his decision, saying it is not easy to leave such a business, especially one that appears to be thriving.
Of course, there were those who were not entirely convinced, wondering why he would want to leave a business that raked in such amounts. There were even those who remembered his past political woes, such as the corruption accusations that led to his removal in 2020.
There was even a little bit of confusion as some noticed that the date on the video seemed to be April 1, and a section of Kenyans wondered whether all this was just an April Fool’s joke.
Despite all these questions and mixed reactions, Sonko stated his intentions were genuine and that he is willing to leave his line of business as he embarks on his new direction in life.
