Nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian has taken her former partner, Musa Leyumpa, to court accusing him of repeatedly claiming she is his wife despite her ending their relationship.
Through her lawyer, Danstan Omari, the senator filed the case on Tuesday, August 12, following a cancelled Samburu customary wedding.
Hezena said that since calling off the marriage, Leyumpa has been on a mission to damage her reputation.
She claimed he had been violent and abusive, and had been using social media and influencers to tarnish her name, potentially harming her political career.
The senator clarified that, despite public reports and claims no dowry was ever paid. The Ksh100,000 Leyumpa gave her known as “ropiyani e loip” in Samburu tradition, was only a token, which she has already returned.
She added that he was meant to give Ksh50,000 but sent double, which displeased community elders.
“I have sued the guy and I want to set the record straight that we are not together anymore. He has caused me so much harm and I want him to face the full force of the law,” Hezena said. She explained that she called off the wedding after a background check on Leyumpa raised concerns.
In her suit, she is also seeking temporary court orders to stop him from contacting or harassing her.
The case will be heard on September 22, 2025, when both parties will present their arguments on whether the restraining orders should continue.
This latest legal battle comes just months after the senator claimed her life was in danger. In June, she publicly said that if anything happened to her, a certain politically connected family in Samburu and its allies should be held responsible.
