Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who previously served as a personal assistant to the late Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, has won the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket ahead of the July 16 parliamentary by-election.

Results released by the party on Friday night showed Nyaga secured 3,221 votes, narrowly defeating his closest rival George Wambugu Kanuri, who garnered 3,077 votes.

The tightly contested nominations attracted 10 candidates, with a total of 8,258 votes cast during the exercise. Other aspirants in the race included Peter Njoroge Mugo, Mary Nyokabi Kamau, Peter Chuchu Njuguna, Maina Kiambati, Joseph Ndirangu, Ezekiah Kamweru, Daniel Ndungu and Stanley Mwangi.

Nyaga was presented with the nomination certificate by a member of UDA National Elections Board by the name Jimmy Kahindi, at Mumbi Primary School, immediately after results were declared.

The process involved electronic nomination, whereby the voters used tablets as opposed to paper to cast their votes.

Prior to nominations, UDA had asked candidates with complaints regarding the nomination process to present such complaints within 24 hours of the declaration of the results to UDA’s Electoral and Nomination Dispute Resolution Committee.

Ol Kalou constituency got an open seat after the death of Hon. Kiaraho in March while he was undergoing cancer treatment at a hospital in Nairobi. The deceased had served three terms and was aged 62 years old.

The focus will now shift to the impending by-elections whereby UDA will be facing stiff competition from the other contestant, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which is the party formed by former Deputy President Gachagua.

DCP is scheduled to conduct its nominations this Saturday. Several candidates have indicated interest in contesting for the DCP ticket ahead of the mini-poll.

Ol Kalou by-election is slated to take place on the 16th of July, 2026.
