President William Ruto has urged young people in the country to avoid being used by politicians to spread chaos, violence or propaganda, saying the youth deserve better opportunities and a stronger role in national development.

Speaking during the Siaya Digital Hubs and Jobs Summit held in Bondo, the President said young people should concentrate on economic opportunities created through government programmes rather than being drawn into divisive political activities.

Ruto said youth have historically been exploited by political actors who mobilise them to participate in disruptive activities during election periods.

“The young people of our nation have been used as political tools, as goons, as bloggers and as supporters for politicians,” he said, urging the youth to reject attempts by leaders to manipulate them for personal or political gain.

The President outlined several government initiatives aimed at creating employment opportunities, including the affordable housing programme, labour export arrangements and the establishment of digital and ICT hubs to enhance skills development and access to jobs in the digital economy.

He emphasised that the country’s future prosperity depends on harnessing the talent, energy and knowledge of young people, describing the youth as a critical asset in national transformation.

Oburu Odinga, who also attended the summit, said global economic development is increasingly driven by information and communication technology, adding that Kenya must prioritise digital innovation to remain competitive.

He expressed confidence that strong political commitment to ICT growth would position Kenya on a sustainable development trajectory and expand opportunities for young people.
