President William Ruto will travel to the United States later this week to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei confirmed the President’s trip on Thursday, September 17, during a media briefing.
“I am pleased to announce that the President has agreed to attend the UNGA, and therefore we are here to inform you that the President will be departing the capital later this week,” Sing’Oei said.
Ruto is expected to take part in the high-level General Debate, which will bring together world leaders at the UN headquarters in New York.
The General Debate is scheduled for September 22 to 26, with the wider high-level week running from September 22 to 28. The theme for this year’s 81st session is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
During his visit, Ruto is also expected to engage Kenyans living in the United States.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has scheduled a presidential engagement with Kenyans in the diaspora for September 20 in New York.
The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for Kenyans living in the US to raise issues affecting them and discuss areas of cooperation and investment.
Ruto’s attendance at the UN General Assembly comes as world leaders prepare to discuss major global issues, including development, climate change, health, peace and security and emerging technologies.
The UN says nearly 130 heads of state and government are expected to attend the high-level week in person.
