President William Ruto has said Kenya is committed to developing the blue economy after returning from the G7 Summit and touring a state-of-the-art marine research vessel at the Port of Mombasa.

The Head of State said the government remains focused on advancing the blue economy as a key driver of food security, job creation and economic growth, particularly for young people.

Speaking after visiting the research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen, Ruto noted that the initiative would help unlock the potential of Kenya’s marine resources while promoting sustainable ocean management.

“We remain focused in our commitment to advancing the blue economy as a strategic pillar for enhancing food security, creating jobs and expanding economic opportunities for young people,” he said.

The vessel, owned by the Kingdom of Norway, operates under the United Nations flag and is managed by the Institute of Marine Research. It is equipped with advanced scientific technology used to study marine ecosystems and ocean resources.

According to Ruto, the ship’s research activities will provide valuable insights into the country’s vast ocean resources and improve understanding of marine productivity, sustainability and effective resource management.

“The vessel’s scientific work will expand our understanding of the vast resources within our oceans, strengthening knowledge on marine productivity, sustainability, and effective resource management,” he stated.

The President also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the vessel’s researchers and Kenyan scientists, saying the partnership would help build local expertise and strengthen maritime research capabilities.

“Equally important is the collaboration between the vessel’s research team and Kenyan scientists, which will enhance local capacity, advance maritime research, and contribute to the sustainable development of our ocean economy,” Ruto added.

The visit comes shortly after the President concluded his trip to France, where he attended the G7 Summit and represented African interests in discussions on global economic development, climate action and international cooperation.
