President William Ruto has ordered immediate investigations into the devastating fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri county.
The Thursday night fire at one of the dormitories at the institution left at least 17 students dead, with several others admitted to the hospital after suffering severe burns.
In a statement on his X handle, Ruto directed the relevant security agencies to expedite investigations into the horrific incident, vowing that those responsible will be held to account.
He also consoled the families that lost their children in the inferno and prayed for a speedy recovery for those injured.
"Our thoughts are with the families of the children who have lost their lives in the fire tragedy at the Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County. This is devastating news. We pray for speedy recovery to the survivors," said Ruto.The president announced the government under the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of the National Government, is mobilising all the necessary resources to support the affected families.
As earlier reported, the Thursday night fire burnt down a dormitory at the institution as the young learners were sleeping.
It is reported that 15 of the deaths occurred at the scene, while two leaners succumbed to fire injuries in hospital.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
