Former Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) boss Humphrey Wattanga has been nominated for a diplomatic role shortly after exiting the tax agency.

President William Ruto named him as Kenya’s High Commissioner to South Africa, in a fresh round of appointments within the country’s Foreign Service.

The nomination was announced on April 8, 2026, as part of routine postings aimed at strengthening Kenya’s presence abroad and supporting the expansion of its diplomatic reach. Wattanga’s redeployment comes just hours after the KRA confirmed he had stepped down as Commissioner General and proceeded on terminal leave.

If approved, Wattanga will take up the role in Pretoria, representing Kenya in South Africa. His appointment now awaits vetting and approval by the National Assembly, in line with constitutional requirements governing the appointment of state officers.

The changes also saw several other diplomats nominated or redeployed to key missions. Dr. Julius Murori Mbijiwe was picked for a posting to the Holy See, while Ambassador Irene Maswan was nominated as Deputy Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Ambassador Judy Muthoni Njau was also named for a role in Belgium and the European Union.

The nominations were formally transmitted to Parliament by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, marking the next step in the approval process before the envoys can assume their new roles.
