President William Ruto has announced a package of initiatives targeting education, employment and economic empowerment for the Akorino community. Central to the plan is the construction of a new Akorino Theological College in Ruai, alongside increased teaching opportunities and financial support programmes.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service at State House, Nairobi on Sunday, April 12, Ruto said the government had already secured a six-acre parcel of land worth about KSh 120 million for the college.
Preparations, including issuance of the title deed and identification of the site have been finalised, with construction expected to begin the following week. He added that the project is scheduled for completion within a year, expressing confidence that future gatherings with the community would be held at the finished facility.
The president noted that earlier political disagreements had delayed progress, but said the issues had since been resolved, paving the way for unity and development. A contractor is set to be appointed immediately, while a trustee structure bringing together government officials and community representatives will oversee the project. The team will include Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala and Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, who will provide academic and legal guidance respectively. Plans for the college also feature a music production studio and an access road to improve connectivity.
Beyond infrastructure, Ruto directed that 50 teaching positions be reserved for qualified Akorino candidates in the next Teachers Service Commission recruitment, describing them as skilled professionals who deserve broader representation.
He also highlighted ongoing collaboration with Akorino Saccos, revealing that the government will disburse KSh 5 million each to 10 cooperatives as part of efforts to strengthen financial capacity and promote economic independence within the community.
“To this end, we will facilitate the construction of a theological college in Ruai, Nairobi, aligned to Akorino Church values, alongside a modern music studio to support and promote Akorino artistes and strengthen 10 SACCOs with a KSh50 million boost. We will also ensure that they are not discriminated against in the public service,” Ruto said in a social media post.
