President William Ruto has officially launched the ClimateWorx Program, a transformative initiative aimed at tackling climate change, restoring ecosystems, and empowering youth through climate action.

Speaking during the launch in Nairobi, President Ruto emphasized the importance of youth participation in shaping Kenya’s future by making cities and urban spaces green, sustainable, and resilient to climate challenges.

The initial phase of the ClimateWorx Program will begin in Nairobi County, focusing on the rehabilitation of the Nairobi River, which has been severely affected by pollution and environmental degradation.

President Ruto praised the work of local groups, such as Komb Green Youths, for their efforts in creating a green park along the river in partnership with the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).

The ClimateWorx initiative will expand on these efforts, serving as a model for other community-led projects.

“By working together with local communities and organizations, we are taking the first steps in restoring the beauty and safety of our cities and neighborhoods,” President Ruto stated. “ClimateWorx will not only combat the effects of climate change but will also empower our youth to lead Kenya’s socio-economic transformation.”

The program’s first phase in Nairobi will officially begin on October 1, 2024, with 20,000 young people being onboarded.

In November, an additional 10,000 youths will be engaged in other areas of Nairobi. By the end of the year, the initiative will expand to Kenya’s four major cities—Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Nakuru—where another 40,098 young people will join.

ClimateWorx will be rolled out nationwide by December, ultimately involving 200,000 youth across all counties.

President Ruto encouraged young Kenyans to apply for the program, emphasizing their critical role in making Kenya’s urban spaces livable and sustainable.

He also thanked the program’s partners, including the Public Space Network, Chemolex, and Muungano wa Wanavijiji, for their contributions in making ClimateWorx a reality.

“Their efforts have not only restored the Nairobi River but also laid the foundation for Kenya’s fight against climate change,” President Ruto said.

He also invited the private sector and development partners to join the initiative, calling for unity in addressing climate challenges.

“Let us all stand together and work in one accord to deliver the urgently needed solutions and resources to support our fight against climate change,” he concluded.

ClimateWorx represents a major step in Kenya’s efforts to build climate resilience while creating jobs and fostering environmental stewardship.
