Members of Parliament have overwhelmingly voted in support of the motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
During the roll call vote in the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8, 281 members voted in support of the impeachment motion, 41 opposed it, while one abstained.
Notably, the 281 MPs who voted in support of the motion exceeded the 233 threshold set by the 2010 Constitution for the deputy president to be impeached.
However, it is not over yet for Gachagua. The motion will now move to the Senate for deliberation. The Senate will either uphold or dismiss the decision to impeach Gachagua.
Should the Senate approve the National Assembly’s decision, Gachagua will cease to hold the Office of the Deputy President.
As he has hinted, Gachagua might move to court to challenge his ouster if the Senate upholds his impeachment.
