Teachers who marked the 2025 KCSE and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) examinations can finally breathe a sigh of relief after the government cleared their pending allowances.

The Ministry of Education on Thursday announced that the balance of the payments had been deposited into examiners’ accounts by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the payment followed the release of KSh1.5 billion by the National Treasury on July 7 to clear the outstanding balances.

“We are pleased to inform all examiners who participated in the marking of the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination that the balance of their marking allowances has been disbursed to their respective accounts,” Ogamba said.

The announcement brings to an end months of anxiety among examiners, some of whom had complained over delays in receiving their full allowances after completing the marking exercise late last year.

Teacher unions and examiners had repeatedly raised concerns over delayed payments, warning that the situation could affect morale and the smooth administration of national examinations if not addressed.

In his statement, Ogamba thanked the examiners for remaining committed despite the delays.

“We commend the examiners and other contracted professionals for their professionalism, patience and continued commitment to fostering quality and credibility in our national assessments and examinations,” he said.

KNEC contracts thousands of teachers every year to mark KCSE and KJSEA examinations, with the exercise playing a key role in ensuring candidates receive their results on time.

The latest payment is expected to ease concerns among teachers as preparations begin for this year’s national examination cycle.
