Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has warned Kenyans to be careful as heavy rains continue across the country, saying cases of diseases like cholera and typhoid could rise.

Speaking in Gatundu South, Muthoni asked families to take simple steps to protect themselves, especially when it comes to drinking water.

She said people should always boil or treat their water before using it, noting that rainwater and water from rivers or other natural sources may not be safe.

“During the heavy rains, it is possible for water to become contaminated. Therefore, people should be cautious,” she emphasized.

According to the PS, the flooding of some regions and the issue of sanitation are likely to worsen the problem, leading to the risk of infections.

She gave these remarks during a discussion with widows, where she also covered issues related to health services.

Muthoni noted that the government is making efforts to help vulnerable communities, stating that over a million widows have already been registered with SHA.

She added that the government will pay for those who cannot afford the contributions so that they can continue receiving treatment.

Some of the widows who attended the meeting said the programme has helped them understand their rights and how to access healthcare.

Leaders from a widows’ group also welcomed the move, saying many widows still face challenges, especially financially, and need such support.

They said the “Lipa Mdogo Mdogo” plan has made it easier for them to get medical care without struggling to raise money at once.
