Post-mortem examinations on bodies recovered from a mass grave at Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho County uncovered disturbing details about the deaths of several children. Investigators focused on 25 children exhumed from the site, with early findings pointing to multiple causes.

Leading the forensic exercise, Government Pathologist Dr Njoroge reported that four of the children died from head injuries, while 10 succumbed to complications linked to premature birth. In two cases, the cause of death could not be established. He noted that the bodies were in varying stages of decomposition, with only a few relatively fresh, while others were severely decomposed, making identification difficult. Among the children, eight were identified as male and 10 as female, while the gender of seven others remained undetermined.

The first phase of the autopsies focused on the children, with examinations on the remaining eight adult bodies scheduled to follow. A total of 33 bodies had been recovered from the cemetery, and investigators indicated that the exercise would continue as efforts intensified to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the grim discovery.
