The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a statement addressing claims of police misconduct in the case of Juliet Wangui Kariuki, a protester who died following the Saba Saba demonstrations in Nanyuki.

The response follows a report published in The Standard Newspaper on July 14, which raised questions about the circumstances of her arrest and treatment.

According to the NPS, Juliet was among 126 individuals arrested during the protests and was arraigned in good health at the Nanyuki Law Courts on July 8, where all detainees faced charges of malicious damage to property.

The police claim no formal complaint has been made alleging misconduct and emphasized that all accused persons either posted a KSh 50,000 cash bail or were remanded in prison.

While denying any wrongdoing, the NPS said it welcomes investigations by relevant agencies and assured the public of transparency, impartiality, and accountability.

In the statement, the police extended condolences to Juliet’s family, expressing sympathy during what they described as a time of “profound sorrow.”

“The NPS reaffirms its commitment to upholding the highest standards of fidelity to the Constitution,” said spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
