Former Migori Governor Zacharia Okoth Obado, Michael Juma Oyamo and Casper Ojwang Obiero have been convicted of the murder of university student Sharon Otieno following a judgment delivered by the High Court’s Criminal Division at Milimani.The conviction marks a major milestone in one of Kenya’s most closely followed murder trials, with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) successfully proving the case beyond reasonable doubt.The prosecution, led by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Wangui Gichuhi, presented evidence that linked the three accused to the brutal killing of Sharon Otieno. After evaluating the evidence, the court found that the prosecution had met the legal threshold required for a murder conviction.Following the verdict, the prosecution applied to have the three convicted persons remain in custody pending sentencing, arguing that they posed a flight risk after being found guilty of a capital offence.The court allowed the application and ordered that Obado, Oyamo and Obiero remain in custody until sentencing on August 18, 2026.Sharon Otieno, a 26-year-old university graduate and mother of three, was 28 weeks pregnant when she was abducted and murdered, a case that sparked widespread public outrage and renewed calls for justice for victims of gender-based violence.The DPP said the conviction underscores its commitment to the professional, impartial and diligent prosecution of serious criminal offences while ensuring perpetrators are held accountable in accordance with the law.
