NTSA Clarifies Fate of Physical Logbooks as Kenya Shifts to Digital System

Motorists with physical vehicle logbooks will continue using them even after the government rolls out the new electronic logbook system next month, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said.

In a clarification issued ahead of the June 10, 2026 rollout, the National Transport and Safety Authority said existing physical logbooks will remain valid and vehicle owners should keep them safely.

The Authority explained that the country will operate both physical and electronic logbooks during the transition period as it gradually moves to the digital system.

However, NTSA noted that some motorists may be required to surrender their physical logbooks during replacement or conversion processes.

The clarification comes as many vehicle owners seek to understand how the new system will work and whether their current documents will become invalid once the e-logbook platform becomes operational.

According to NTSA, motorists will not be moved automatically to the digital system. Those wishing to switch from physical logbooks to electronic ones must first apply for a duplicate logbook before an e-logbook is generated.

The Authority said the digital system is expected to speed up services, especially vehicle ownership transfers, which will now take just one working day under the new arrangement.

Not like conventional logbooks that can get lost or destroyed, according to NTSA, the electronic logbook can be downloaded several times so long as the owner still owns the car.

They have claimed that the introduction of such technology is aimed at increasing efficiency, transparency, and security when handling car ownership and registration issues.

Real-time updates and easy verification of vehicle details using QR codes can be achieved by adopting this system.

This service will be obtained through the government’s online platforms, such as eCitizen and NTSA website.

At the same time, NTSA clarified that access to e-logbooks will only be available to authorised account holders and recognised parties listed in the ownership structure.

For Kenyans buying vehicles already registered under the digital system, the Authority said ownership transfer will automatically generate an e-logbook for the new owner.
