The National Police Service (NPS) has clarified its stand after junior police commander, Francis Omata, made remarks suggesting that the recruitment of women into the Service be reduced.
The remarks were made during the 23rd Jukwaa La Usalama Forum in Laikipia County on Thursday, 31st July 2025, went viral on social media and alarmed the public.
The gathering had been attended by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, the Inspector General of Police, and other high-ranking government officials.
The CS and the Inspector General were quick to distance themselves from the remark made by the officer, reiterating the government’s commitment to gender equality.
In a later statement, the NPS mentioned that the opinion of the officer was personal and in no way signifies the Service’s official opinion.
“Woman still remains an essential component of policing, law enforcement, and professional service delivery across the country and world over,” the statement added.
The Service mentioned that many women officers have gained positions in international deployments, which are the result of advantage, professionalism, and grit.
In reiterating its stance, the NPS said it remains committed to upholding the constitutional one-third gender rule in employment and representation.
“We value the service of all officers men and women—who serve diligently to make Kenyans, visitors, and investors feel secure,” the statement summed up.
