The National Police Service Air Wing is showcasing its aviation capabilities at the 2026 Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) International Show in Mombasa, giving the public an opportunity to learn more about the unit’s role in policing and emergency response.
The Air Wing is participating in the event under this year’s theme, “Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth,” with its presence highlighting how aerial capabilities support wider national objectives.
According to the National Police Service, the Air Wing is headquartered at Wilson Airport in Nairobi and operates under the command of Commandant Captain James Kabo, SAIG.
The unit has reorganised its operations into five departments covering piloting, engineering, flight dispatch, cabin crew and administration.
The Air Wing operates eight specialised aircraft comprising two fixed-wing planes, one AW139 helicopter, four Mi-17 heavy-lift helicopters and one B206L helicopter.
The aircraft provide aerial support for law enforcement operations, including emergency evacuations, surveillance and other security operations across the country.
A key development highlighted by the NPS is the Air Wing’s certification by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) as an Approved Maintenance Organisation (AMO). KCAA says an AMO certification allows an organisation to provide aircraft maintenance services in accordance with civil aviation regulations.
The Air Wing has also invited members of the public attending the Mombasa show to visit the NPS Pavilion, where specialist officers are demonstrating the unit’s equipment and operations through interactive displays.
The participation provides the public with a closer look at a specialised component of the National Police Service whose work often takes place away from the ground and plays an important role in supporting security and emergency operations.
The NPS Air Wing has evolved significantly since its establishment, with the service saying the unit has undergone continuous development to strengthen its operational and technical capabilities.
