Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning against the misuse of abduction claims for political or personal gain, saying such actions undermine genuine victims and divert critical security resources.

“We are witnessing a growing trend of fake kidnappings and staged abductions. These self-engineered incidents trivialize the serious nature of abduction crimes,” Murkomen said, speaking during a meeting with Members of Parliament.

He emphasized that abductions are a serious criminal offense and cautioned that fabricating such incidents is not only irresponsible but also potentially unlawful.

“There is a need for a robust legal framework to penalize individuals who exploit these situations for selfish interests,” the CS said. “Such acts misuse vital national security resources that should be dedicated to protecting the public.”

Murkomen noted an alarming rise in baseless abduction claims in recent months, often linked to attention-seeking behavior.

He warned that beyond wasting public resources, these false reports damage personal relationships and create confusion, as the motives behind them are often unclear.

He cited a 2023 incident involving Nobert Mulwa, who staged his own abduction to extort money from his sister.

“He tied himself up, took photos, and sent them to family members claiming he was being held hostage, while in reality, he was hiding in Kitengela,” Murkomen recounted.

The CS also highlighted cases where individuals fake abductions to escape personal situations, such as relationships, calling such behaviour reckless and deeply concerning. “This is not a joke. Abduction is a serious global issue, and it should be treated as such,” he said.

Murkomen’s remarks come amid growing controversy involving a Member of Parliament accused of faking his own abduction, an incident that has drawn public outrage and triggered an investigation by law enforcement.

Hospitalised Juja MP Koimburi who allegedly staged an abduction.

“It is extremely troubling when a sitting MP orchestrates a fake abduction,” he said. “An elected leader holds a position of public trust. When they engage in such theatrics, it erodes public confidence and undermines the gravity of real abduction cases.”

He criticized the alleged incident, describing it as a scripted performance that misled the police and public.

“Someone writes a script, pretends to be abducted, and later emerges with stories about shadowy squads—only for it to be revealed they spent the night in comfort. It’s insulting to real victims and wastes state resources,” Murkomen concluded.
