Students at ACK St. Luke’s Nguumo Boys High School in Kibwezi West have been sent home after unrest at the school led to the burning of two dormitories on Sunday night.
The school was closed indefinitely following the incident, which also left behind massive destruction of property.
Images from the school showed burnt beds, blackened walls and scattered debris inside one of the affected dormitories, while students’ boxes and personal belongings were seen piled outside.
Police officers were called to the school to calm the situation, with authorities saying normalcy has since been restored as investigations continue.
By Tuesday afternoon, the cause of the unrest had not yet been established.
The current case has joined the list of school fires and unrest cases which have been on the rise in various regions since the beginning of the second term.
As reported in March, a few students from Maranda High School had been detained following an attack on a recently constructed dormitory.
There have also been numerous reports in recent months of such acts in the Makueni County where a number of schools have even been closed down due to the expense of repairs and renovations being borne by parents.
According to the Ministry of Education, such cases pose a serious danger not only to the students but also to their education process and, therefore, it has cautioned schools about it.
The ministry is urging schools to be well-prepared for any such situations and strictly adhere to safety measures.
Parents and residents are now waiting for investigations into the Nguumo Boys incident as questions emerge over what triggered the unrest.
