Motorists using the busy Ngong Road corridor could soon experience smoother journeys after the government announced the completion of the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road flyover, one of Nairobi’s major road infrastructure projects.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo confirmed that construction of the flyover has been completed and that the facility will soon be opened for use.

The 800-metre elevated dual carriageway, constructed by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority, is expected to ease congestion at the often-busy junction linking Ngong Road, Naivasha Road and King’ara Road.

For years, the area has been a headache for commuters travelling between Ngong, Dagoretti and Nairobi’s Central Business District, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.

According to Omollo, the new flyover will allow through-traffic to move more efficiently while reducing delays caused by vehicles turning into neighbouring roads.

“Once fully operational, the flyover is expected to significantly ease congestion along one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors, drastically reduce travel times between Ngong and the Central Business District and improve connectivity to key urban facilities, including the nearby Talanta Stadium ahead of AFCON 2027,” the PS said.

The project’s completion comes just weeks before the expected completion of the nearby Talanta Stadium, which is being prepared as part of Kenya’s infrastructure plans ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Besides improving access to the stadium, the flyover is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters who have long endured traffic snarl-ups along the corridor.

Construction of the project began in September 2024 and was financed through a KSh3.58 billion loan from Spain’s Corporate International Fund (FIEM).

Earlier this year, William Ruto expressed confidence that the project would be completed by June 2026, describing the junction as one of Nairobi’s major congestion hotspots.

“I am informed that by June, the contractor will be done with this project. This junction has been a big problem with congestion,” President Ruto said during an inspection tour in February.

Government officials say preparations are now underway to operationalise the flyover, with agencies involved in traffic management, road safety and public awareness expected to support its rollout.

Once opened, the new overpass is expected to become a key link in Nairobi’s road network, offering relief to commuters and improving movement around one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.
