Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has warned UDA leaders seeking to join his People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) that they will not be welcomed if they previously insulted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Nyoro said such leaders must first make peace with Gachagua before seeking a political home in PPK.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 19, Nyoro said he had seen some UDA leaders congratulating him after he left the ruling party and took his party into the opposition.

However, he said those who had attacked Gachagua while serving in government should not expect an easy entry into PPK.

“If you are still in government and you have insulted Gachagua, the People’s Party has no time for you unless you go and make amends with him,” Nyoro said.

He extended the condition to leaders who have attacked other members of the opposition alliance, including former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Cabinet Minister Martha Karua.

Nyoro also warned leaders who he accused of being involved in the deployment of goons to churches, saying PPK would not welcome them with open arms.

His remarks come two days after he formally severed ties with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance and joined the opposition through PPK.

Nyoro has since stepped up efforts to build the party in the Mt Kenya region, with two UDA nominated MCAs from Kiambu and Murang’a among those who have already defected to his side.

The move has, however, attracted criticism from allies of Gachagua, who have questioned Nyoro’s intentions and accused him of attempting to divide the Mt Kenya vote ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro has dismissed the criticism and insisted that his focus is on removing Ruto from power in 2027.

“Ruto is Kenya’s number one enemy,” he said, adding that he would not fight anyone supporting the opposition push to send the President home.

The latest remarks could further complicate the political battle for control of the Mt Kenya vote, with Nyoro’s PPK and Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) both seeking to consolidate support in the region.

Nyoro is expected to continue his political mobilisation in Mt Kenya as he seeks to establish PPK as a major player ahead of the 2027 elections.
