Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims that the opposition has named its 2027 elections presidential candidate.

When talking in an interview with Radio Citizen on Monday, September 15, Natembeya said no one should be going about saying they are the opposition’s flagbearer yet. He called such claims “cold facts,” meaning they do not depend on any real agreement.

His remark came after that of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who stated that he would be the opposition candidate in the next general election.

Natembeya was blunt to say that the opposition has not made any decision and that when the time arrives, they will consider a number of key factors before they choose somebody to run for president such as how many followers each one of them has and whether they have the resources to wage a serious campaign.

We must make a decision as a team,” Natembeya stated. “No one should be walking about thumping chest stating they’re the flagbearer. These are basic facts.”

He went on, “In order to choose a flagbearer, we’ll start by looking at how many people you’ve brought to the table and whether or not you have the funds necessary for a presidential campaign.”.

For the moment, Natembeya stated that the opposition would be united and determined to resist President William Ruto’s policies, which he believes are hurting Kenyans.

“We are not against the President as a person,” Natembeya explained. “But he has not lived up to his campaign promises to Kenyans. Most of his initiatives actually make life complicated for people.”

A day prior to that, on Sunday, September 14, Gachagua had spoken to a church congregation, announcing he’s ready to vie for the presidency.

In his words, he’ll demonstrate to those who doubt his capability to defeat President Ruto that they are doing so in vain.

Gachagua, who was previously faced with impeachment rhetoric, said this will not discourage him from contesting.

He promised that if elected, he would focus on revamping key sectors like healthcare, housing, and education.

Why do I need to be president?” Gachagua asked. “If Kenyans elect me if God wills it I want to revive the Kenyan government. I want citizens to go into a hospital and get medicine.”

He concluded by saying, “I am running for President. I’m qualified, I have support, and I’m working to get more. I’ll be on the ballot.
