Nairobi residents whose homes and businesses were damaged due to the recent floods will not be charged any fees for the next 30 days as they repair their properties. This was announced by the Nairobi City County Government on March 11.
This comes just days after the city was hit by serious flooding due to heavy rainfall on March 6. The flooding caused many residents to lose their properties as the waters damaged homes and businesses.
The floods have caused the death of 49 people in the country. Of the total number of fatalities, 29 were from Nairobi. The Nairobi City County Government has therefore waived the repair fees to allow residents to repair their properties as they wish.
The waiver will allow residents to repair their homes and businesses without the need to pay any fees to the county government. This is because of the damages caused by the flooding. The damages include leaking roofs and broken walls.
Acting County Secretary Godfrey Akumali stated that this was a directive from the office of the governor to ease the process for those who suffered from the effects of the floods to recover from the destruction caused to their homes and businesses.
This waiver has been issued to enable those who were affected by the floods to start repairs on their homes and businesses without undergoing a tedious process.
Some buildings were damaged by the floods, and this waiver will enable those who own such buildings to make quick repairs to prevent further danger to those who live in those buildings.
The waiver will be valid for 30 days starting from March 11. However, the county officials will be available to assist people on how to go about the repair process.
On the other news, the Kenya Meteorological Department announced that rain may not stop in the country in the near future. The officials claimed that the areas around the Lake Victoria region, the Central Highlands, and the Rift Valley are likely to receive more rain.
