Legendary American singer-songwriter Billy Joel has revealed he is battling with a rare neurological condition, normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), which has left him unable to drive and uncertain about his future as a performer.
“I’m not allowed to drive. And I can’t do performances because what the neurologist told me, every time you do a show, it’s like you’re getting a concussion,” Joel said.
The 77-year-old singer said he had undergone brain surgery and has to take a series of tests before being able to tour again.
He stated his NPH diagnosis in early 2025, shortly after undergoing surgery to treat the neurological condition. He added the extremely loud volume, lighting, stress and energy are all concerns and stressors on his health.
NPH is brain disorder caused by buildup of cerebrospinal fluid that accumulates in the brain’s ventricles. It can cause cognitive issues, difficulty walking and the loss of bladder control.
Billy Joel is known for his hits “Uptown Girl” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” among others, is to have sold more than 150 million records worldwide.
In May 2025, he canceled his concerts, stating he had to stay under doctors’ instructions, where he was undergoing physical therapy and was hence advised to refrain from performing.
