Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed that the government will take firm measures to tackle religious extremism and radicalisation while protecting the constitutional right to freedom of worship.
Murkomen said the government would strengthen efforts to prevent religious radicalisation, emphasising that action against extremist activities would not interfere with the rights of Kenyans to practise their faith.
He commended the multi-agency team led by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and the Judiciary for their role in the successful prosecution and conviction of individuals responsible for the Shakahola Massacre.
The Cabinet Secretary also announced plans to introduce measures to regulate mining activities, address conflicts associated with the sector and ensure local communities benefit from natural resources in their areas.
Murkomen made the remarks during a thanksgiving service at Bushiangala Church of God in Ikolomani, Kakamega County, where he joined congregants in supporting the development of church infrastructure.
The service was attended by Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga, Ikolomani MP Bernard Shinali, Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka, Lurambi MP Titus Khamala and Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe.
Western Regional Commissioner Allan Machari, Members of County Assembly and other leaders also attended the event.
