Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has announced plans to elevate Kiganjo Police Training College into a fully chartered university for police officers.

Speaking during a tour of the institution alongside Police IG Douglas Kanja, Murkomen said the proposed university would offer degree programmes tailored for officers seeking specialised training in different security fields.

Will Kiganjo Police College become a university?

The CS explained that the institution is expected to grow beyond a standard police college and become a regional centre for advanced security studies serving officers from East Africa, Central Africa and other parts of the continent.

Murkomen said the university’s courses would be aligned with emerging security challenges, allowing officers to gain modern skills and academic qualifications within the institution.

During the visit, the Interior CS and top security officials inspected the ongoing Basic Recruit Training Course involving more than 5,000 recruits at the college.

He praised the recruits for undergoing intense training, saying the institution is producing disciplined and capable officers who can help tackle insecurity and rising cases of goonism in the country.

Murkomen expressed confidence in the trainees’ preparedness, noting that the rigorous drills and physical training would equip them to effectively deal with criminal gangs and security threats.

Located in Nyeri County, Kiganjo Police Training College is among Kenya’s leading police training institutions. The college received accreditation from TVETA in 2017 and currently offers diploma and higher diploma programmes under the National Police Service Examination Board.
