A Murang’a man accused of fatally running over his wife with a car in 2021 has been convicted of manslaughter.
The Kandara Law Courts delivered the verdict on Tuesday, rejecting the man’s claims that unknown assailants had hijacked his vehicle and carried out the act.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the court heard that on the night of May 31, 2021, the accused had called his wife shortly before arriving at their home in the Mwana-wikio area of Gatanga sub-county, asking her to open the gate for him.
Moments later, he drove his Toyota Probox through the gate, hitting and killing her on the spot.
During the trial, the man claimed that he was attacked by unidentified men who allegedly took control of the vehicle as he neared the compound and fled after the incident.
However the prosecutors Hilda Jebet and Millicent Oduor told the court there was no evidence to support his version of events, and that the accused was alone at the time.
The court sided with the prosecution and found the accused guilty of manslaughter. He is expected to be sentenced on July 23.
