Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has revealed that diaspora remittances have surpassed all traditional foreign income sources combined, becoming the largest single source of income for Kenya.
Speaking at the official opening of the Western Kenya Edition of the Diaspora Job Fair at Mbale High School in Vihiga County, Mudavadi emphasized in the past year alone, Kenyans living abroad sent home KSh 671 billion, a significant contribution to the nation’s economy.
He said the government’s goal to increase diaspora remittances to KSh 1 trillion by 2027 adding that this ambitious target is part of a broader government initiative to encourage Kenyan youth to seek employment opportunities overseas.
“Our young people have an incredible opportunity to secure their livelihoods and support their families by taking advantage of international job prospects,” Mudavadi stated. He encouraged the youth to actively pursue these opportunities and highlighted the government’s commitment to facilitating their success abroad.
Mudavadi also urged Kenyan youth working overseas to uphold the highest standards of discipline, represent the country with pride, and maintain a positive image in their host countries.
“Carry our flag with honor and demonstrate the values that make Kenya proud,” he added.
