The Ministry of Education has announced that all schools in Kenya will reopen on January 6, 2025, marking the beginning of a crucial academic year. The first term of 2025 will run for 13 weeks, with a midterm break scheduled for five days. This term is particularly significant as it will see the transition of the pioneer cohort of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to Grade 9.
To ensure a smooth transition, the government has taken significant steps to support the expansion and scaling up of educational infrastructure and resources. One of the most important initiatives has been the construction of 16,000 new classrooms across the country. These classrooms are being built to accommodate the growing number of students, especially as the CBC cohort moves forward in their educational journey.
In addition to the classroom infrastructure, the Ministry of Education has dispatched a total of 9,926,618 textbooks nationwide. These textbooks are intended to support the curriculum and help students at all levels, including those transitioning to Grade 9 under the new system. This marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to ensure that every student has access to the learning materials they need.
The government has also made strides in boosting the teaching workforce. A total of 79,928 teachers have been employed through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Of these, 56,298 teachers have been appointed on permanent and pensionable terms, ensuring long-term stability and professional development. Additionally, 20,000 teachers have been hired as interns to support schools during this transition period. These teachers will play a critical role in managing the increasing number of students and maintaining a high standard of education as the CBC cohort moves into higher grades.
This transition to Grade 9 under the CBC marks a new chapter in Kenya’s educational system, and the government’s investment in infrastructure, resources, and personnel reflects its commitment to ensuring a successful shift. As the first cohort of CBC students continues their journey, the government is focused on ensuring that both students and teachers have the support they need for success in 2025 and beyond.
