President William Ruto has announced that major construction works at the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone will officially begin later this year, marking a decisive step in Kenya’s plan to accelerate industrialisation and expand its manufacturing base.
Speaking after a meeting with senior officials of the Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the President said the long-awaited groundbreaking signals renewed momentum in Kenya’s drive to create jobs and strengthen export capacity through modern industrial infrastructure.
President Ruto met George Elombi on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, where he praised the bank for its crucial role in financing strategic national projects.
"We are also working closely with the Africa Export-Import Bank on creative and innovative financing solutions to accelerate national transformation, including in the roll-out of the National Infrastructure Fund," said RutoHe highlighted Afreximbank’s support for infrastructure associated with the Dongo Kundu SEZ as key to unlocking new investment and industrial opportunities along the coast.
The President added that Kenya is also partnering with the bank on innovative financing mechanisms to fast-track national development, including initiatives tied to the forthcoming National Infrastructure Fund.
